WTA: Maria Sharapova separates from coach Sven Groeneveld

Maria Sharapova is on the lookout for a new coach: The four-year partnership with Sven Groeneveld has been concluded by mutual agreement with the Russian in Indian Wells.

Roland Garros 2014 – this was the biggest title Maria Sharapova could win during her collaboration with Sven Groeneveld, last fall in Tianjin. Sharapova is not doing well last week: After a clean slate against Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open in Doha, the 30-year-old lost to Monica Niculuescu in round one, as well as to Naomi Osaka at the BNP Paribas Open.

Groeneveld had also accompanied Sharapova during her 15-month doping ban, preparing the five-time major winner for her comeback at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart in 2017. The Dutchman had already coached players such as Ana Ivanovic or Caroline Wozniacki on the tour, and Tommy Haas and Nicolas Kiefer on the men’s tour.
