WTA: Mona Barthel drops out of Indian Wells against Elina Svitolina

Mona Barthel (Neumünster) was eliminated in the second round of the WTA tournament at Indian Wells in California. The 27-year-old Elina Svitolina (Ukraine), who finished fourth in the world rankings, was defeated 4-6,3-6 on Saturday.

Barthel had beaten Veronica Cepede Roig in round one, but with Elina Svtolina she was served by an opponent who has already won two titles this year: in Brisbane and most recently in Dubai. The overall match lasted 82 minutes – in which Barthel made seven double mistakes. Too many against a player like Svitolina.

Afterwards, Germany’s top players will fight for the third round: Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 12) will face Natalia Wichlyantseva, followed by Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 10) and Yekaterina Makarova (both Russia).
