Cycling: Tirreno-Adriatico: Kwiatkowski slips into the lead jersey – Froome breaks in

Polish cycling professional Michal Kwiatkowski has taken the lead in the overall standings of the stage race Tirreno-Adriatico. On the fifth, 178-kilometre stage from Castelraimondo to Filottrano, the home town of Michele Scarponi, the Italian Michele Scarponi, who died in 2017, the 27-year-old from Team Sky took third place in the race, leading Italy’s Damiano Caruso (BMC Racing) with a lead of three seconds to take second place in the overall standings.

The British rider Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) won the stage and his compatriot Chris Froome (Sky) suffered a break-in. The four-time Tour de France winner left early and crossed the finish line eight minutes behind. Tony Martin (Cottbus/Katusha-Alpecin) finished 26th as the best German.

Yates had attacked out of the main field 3.8 kilometres from the finish line and saved seven seconds ahead of Slovakian World Champion Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) in front of Kwiatkowski and Caruso (10th) to the finish line.
