ATP: Tommy Haas announces end of career in Indian Wells

Now it’s official: Tommy Haas won’t be returning to the ATP tour. This was announced by the 39-year-old on Thursday (Eastern time) in Indian Wells.

The scenery and the circumstances could not have been more worthy of the occasion: An almost full center court in Indian Wells, the best player of all time at his side. Nevertheless, Tommy Haas found it difficult this Thursday (local time) to draw a final line under his great career. On the video screen, the long-time German number one was once again honored with a compilation of some highlights of his career, before Haas picked up the microphone and thanked all those who had accompanied him on the ATP tour over the years.

The Hamburg native played his last match last year in Kitzbühel, his last success was against Roger Federer, who now also accompanied him in California: at the MercedesCup 2017 in Stuttgart. Even then, however, Tommy Haas had already proven himself as tournament director of Indian Wells.

The 39-year-old Haas can thus look back on 15 titles on the ATP tour, the last of which he won in 2013 in Vienna’s Stadthalle. In 2002, Haas achieved his highest career ranking: the German, who has also held an American passport for several years, was ranked second in the world.
