ATP: Edema at Thiem: Conservative treatment planned

Dominic Thiem suffered bone marrow oedema in his ankle during his “misstep” in the third round match of the ATP Master in Indian Wells. This was the result of an investigation in Vienna. The sixth in the world rankings will initially be treated conservatively. The goal for the Austrian is to take part in the sand court tournament in Monte Carlo (from 15. April) to return to the tour. However, coach Günter Bresnik urges patience.

Thiem folded in his game against Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay/No. 30) and had to give up in the third set at 2-4. As sport.ORF.at reported, a magnetic resonance imaging of Rudolf Schabusin and Johann Pidlich in Vienna has now shown that the 24-year-old has suffered bone marrow edema due to the compression. This has accumulated quite a lot of fluid in the right ankle.

We will not decide which way to go until the end of next week,” said coach Günter Bresnik on Saturday at the APA. However, Bresnik did not want to confirm a circulated hairline crack. He doesn’t believe in surgery. A further MRI examination at the end of next week will provide further information.

Thiem is still in pain when walking. However, according to his trainer, who spoke of a”grosser injury” with regard to bone marrow edemas. That’s why Bresnik held back with forecasts about the time of Thiem’s comeback on the tour. The two-time French Open semi-finalist himself initially envisaged the Monte Carlo clay court tournament, which will take place on 15 March. April starts.

“You really have to depend on how well he recovers next week,” Bresnik put into perspective, for whom the injury is a shock, as it is for his protégé Thiem:”If that happens before the clay court season – the best time for him – it is of course damaging. Not only haven’t you done anything for two or three weeks now. “It’ll be a while before you’re back to normal.”
