MLB: Nationals sign pitcher Jeremy Hellickson with Minor League contract

The Washington Nationals have signed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson with a Minor-League contract including an invitation to spring training. The right-handed man was most recently active for the Baltimore Orioles.

Should Hellickson make it into the major league squad of Nationals, he would receive a one-year contract for two million dollars. In addition, he could earn four million dollars in the form of performance bonuses, the Associated Press reports.

Last year Hellickson was 8-11 with a 5.43 ERA over 30 starts for the Philadelphia Phillies and Oioles, who had brought him to Maryland by trade at the end of July. At the O’s he was 2-6 with a 6.97 ERA over ten starts.

At Nationals, Hellickson is considered a contender for fifth place in the pitching rotation, which already includes Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark.

Nationals would be Hellickson’s fifth station at the MLB. His career began in 2010 with the Tampa Bay Rays, in 2015 he worked for Arizona and from 2016 for the Phillies, before moving to the O’s in mid-2017.
