Former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel/No. 10) has reached the third round of the WTA tournament in Miami at high speed.
In her opening game, the 30-year-old beat Johanna Larsson from Sweden 6-2, 6-2 after only 1:05 hours. In the first round, Kerber had a walk-through.
Andrea Petkovic had previously made it into the second round in Florida. The 30-year-old from Darmstadt, who qualified for the main draw, won 6-2, 6-0 against Slovenian Polona Hercog and will now face Australian Daria Gavrilova.
The two-time Grand Slam winner Kerber, who was clearly defeated in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells by the Russian Darja Kasatkina, has to deal with Aliaksandra Sasnovitch (Belarus) or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia/No. 23). In the evening there will be a German duel between Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 12) and Carina Witthöft (Hamburg).
Mischa Zverev failed with the men on Thursday night. In his first round match in Montpellier at the beginning of February, the man from Hamburg lost to the Frenchman Benoit Paire after a good start with 6:1, 1:6, 2:6.
