NextGen stars Borna Coric, Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe have entered the third round of the Miami Open in step.
Coric had the most trouble. The 21-year-old had to fight for almost three hours in Crandon Park before the 6:7 (5:7), 6:3, 6:4 against Leonardo Mayer from Argentina had been won. Exactly one week ago, Coric, who was 29th in Florida, lost the semi-final of Indian Wells 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 to Grand Slam record winner Roger Federer (Switzerland).
For the first time in the third round of Key Biscayne is local hero Tiafoe. The World Rankings 63. from Orlando surprisingly defeated the British Australian Open semi-finalist Kyle Edmund (No. 21) 7:6 (7:4), 4:6, 7:6 (7:5). Tiafoe alone scored 15 aces, a total of three points more than Edmund in the 2:26 hour game.
The easiest player was the unseeded Canadian Shapovalov, who proved his good form by beating Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 7-5. Shapovalov (18) won the point when the first service came in 81 percent of the cases.
