WTA: After 0:6 – Olympic champion Puig shocks Caroline Wozniacki

Olympic champion Monica Puig was a big surprise at the Miami Open.

The 24-year-old from Puerto Rico defeated the Melbourne winner late on Saturday night 6-6, 6-4, 6-4 and celebrated one of her biggest victories since her triumph in Rio against Angelique Kerber in the final, Puig’s first victory over a top 5 player since the Olympic Games two years ago.

“I’ve waited so long for such a moment – to find myself again. It feels wonderful,” said the emotional world rankings 82, who lived in Miami for a long time and virtually had a home game.

Puig had made it to 27th place in the world in September 2006 but failed to build on their success and did not reach a final in Luxembourg until autumn 2017.

Puig will face Maria Sakkari in round three, who won against Annett Kontaveit.
