ATP: Novak Djokovic attacks Barcelona with wildcard

The ATP-500 tournament in Barcelona has another superstar to look forward to. Novak Djokovic has signed up for the sand court tournament by wildcard.

The Serb is on his way back and tries to play as many matches as possible. After the quarter-finals of the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo against Dominic Thiem, Djokovic will now play in Barcelona.

The performance will be very special, because the “Djoker” hasn’t played in Barcelona for 12 years now. At 18, the Serb lost to Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round and has not returned since. Now Djokovic, who has shown himself to be in better shape in Monte Carlo, wants to remove title favourites Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem from the throne.

The last clay court title for Djokovic was almost two years ago when he completed the career grand slam at the French Open in 2016.

Djokovic will face competition from Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin, Pablo Carreno Busta and Diego Schwartzman, who also want to play for the title in Catalonia.
