Lleyton Hewitt will make another comeback on the professional tour at the ATP tournament in Estoril, Portugal next week. The Australian received a wildcard from the tournament organization for the double, in which he will compete with his compatriot Alex de Minaur.
“We have a wild card, we have former world number one Lleyton hewitt, who is interrupting his retirement to compete at the Millenium Estoril Open alongside Alex de Minaur,” twittered the officials of the ATP-250 event.
Hewitt ended his career in 2016, but was persuaded by Australian Sam Groth to play in the Australian Open doubles last January. They reached the quarter-finals with a win over Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer.
19-year-old De Minaur played his first professional year in 2015 and is currently ranked 114th in the ATP rankings. In February, under Captain Hewitt, he made his Davis Cup debut against Germany, losing to Sascha Zverev after five contested sets.
Hewitt, who has been the youngest in the world to date, won two major tournaments, the US Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002. In recent months he has been a consultant in the Minaur team, such as at the ATP tournament in Brisbane.
