Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Anett Kontaveit wins Stuttgart Break Festival

The unseeded Anett Kontaveit has surprisingly reached the semi-finals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

By Florian Goosmann from StuttgartIn a dramatic match after 2 hours and 55 minutes of play, Estonia’s number 31 won 7:5, 6:7 (6), 6:3 over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who was also not seeded. In the fiercely contested match alone, twelve games in sets two and three were better than the first, in the decisive round Kontaveit always had the lead after breaks to 3:1, 4:2 and 5:3, but could not use three match points and gave Pavlyuchenkova the opportunity to equalize again. The Russian did not use this chance, Kontaveit broke again and turned match point number four. She will now face the winner of the game between Karolina Pliskova and Yelena Ostapenko.

Kontaveit and Pavlyuchenkova had both benefited from the tasks of their quarter-final opponents the day before: Kontaveit led 6-0, 2-0 against Angelique Kerber when the German gave w.o. because of a muscular injury to her thigh; Pavlyuchenkova benefited from Garbina Muguruza’s defeat after winning the first set.
