Gael Monfils and Munich should simply not be: This time the Frenchman arrives with broken clubs.

Gael Monfils had to take some breaks before the tournament started. Because “La Monf” has a club problem: apparently all his rackets were destroyed on his flight from Geneva to Munich.

Amusing the exchange between Monfils and Lufthansa: If he could buy new rackets somewhere…? Monfils replied that he would initially train with other rackets – anything but ideal, of course.

The “Munich curse” for the Frenchman thus continues seamlessly: for years he has wanted to compete in the Bavarian state capital, constantly an injury intervened. Last year, at his actual premiere, Monfils failed as the top seed in his opening match against Hyeon Chung.

So for 2018, Sponsor Wilson has to keep his fingers crossed to send a replacement quickly – with enough protective film around it…
