WTA: Maria Sharapova in Madrid …

Maria Sharapova also won her second match at the WTA tournament in Madrid: The Russian defeated Irina Camelia Begu from Romania in two sets. Julia Görges’s potential next opponent has already been determined: this would be Caroline Garcia from France.

Second match, second victory for Maria Sharapova: After her opening win against Mihaela Buzarnescu, where the five-time major winner had also benefited from her opponent’s fatigue (Buzarnescu had only played the final in Prague on Saturday), Sharapova beat Irina Camelia Begu 7-5 and 6-1 in round two.

Sharapova will face Kristina Mladenovic in round three, who defeated Shuai Zhang from China in three sets after almost two hours in Kamp. Sharapova needed 92 minutes to celebrate her fourth victory in the fourth duel with the Romanian.

After her first-round victory, the 31-year-old summed up her years at the WTA premier event in the Spanish capital: She had really grown fond of the tournament in the ten years of its existence, as had the city of Madrid. Moreover, Sharapova said after the match against Buzarnescu, she is still pursuing great goals. In any case, she is not satisfied with her current WTA ranking, rank 52.

In the first match of the day on the Arantxa Sanchez court, Caroline Garcia beat Petra Martic in two sets. Garcia, who had a strong finish last year, won 6:3 and 7:5 after 91 minutes. She could now meet Julia Görges, who will deal with Lara Arruabarena in the evening.
