WTA: Görges failed in Madrid round of 16

Julia Görges has missed her first quarter-final at the WTA tournament in Madrid in seven years. The 29-year-old from Bad Oldesloe had to admit defeat to the seventh seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia in the round of 16 after 1:20 hours with 2:6, 4:6.

Görges (No. 11), who only reached the last eight in 2011, was the only German player in the starting field of the 5.5 million euro sand court tournament. Former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel) had cancelled her participation due to muscular problems in her thigh. Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) is also absent from the Spanish capital due to injury. Mona Barthel (Neumünster) had failed in the qualification.
