Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000m tournament in Madrid with a great performance. Opponent Leonardo Mayer had nothing against the third in the world rankings – 6:4, 6:2 after just over an hour of playing time.
A break at the first opportunity at the score of 2:2, then set to zero to 4:2, the 5:3 played out in not even two minutes, fended off the only break point at 5:4 with an ace – and shortly afterwards brought home set one: It was a promising start between Sascha Zverev and sand court specialist Leonardo Mayer in their premiere duel.
Sentence two? Walked just as well from the German’s point of view. Zverev made the break straight away, then thundered four first serves into the field – 2-0. 4-1 on another break, this time competitive, and the match was decided in favour of the 20-year-old shortly afterwards – with a near-zero serve and a thunderous forehand inside.
The numbers? 19 winners with only 12 unforced mistakes on the part of Zverev; 10 to 18 however the balance with the Argentinian. Zverev only scored eight points on his own serve – strong!
In the quarter-finals, the Hamburg native will now face Pablo Cuevas or John Isner. He also had to play Cuevas in Madrid last year, also in the last eight. At that time the Argentinean won in three sets.
