ATP: Madrid: Mektic/Peya win the title – Bryan-Brothers give up in set one

Nikola Metkic and Alexander Peya won their first Masters 1000cc title in Madrid.

The Croatian-Austrian pairing benefited from Bob Bryan’s hip injury at 5:3.

Peya dedicated the trophy to his wife, who looks after the children at home – in keeping with Mother’s Day. “It allows me to travel the world and still play,” said the 37-year-old.

Mektic/Peya have only been playing together since the beginning of the year and have now won their second title – along with three other finals this season.

The Bryan brothers have thus failed to win their 39th title at Masters 1000 level and take the lead again in the double world rankings – and thus put the oldest double pairing at the top on Monday. Daniel Nestor thus remains the oldest king for the time being: at 40 years and 5 days, he was still number one in the world.
