Tennis: Roger Federer new number one – Görges overtakes Kerber

Roger Federer has taken the lead in the ATP world ranking. Rafael Nadal had to retire from the sun after losing to Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals of Madrid and is now second. However, the Spaniard could take the lead again in Rome.

Alexander Zverev has cemented his positions behind the two superstars with his tournament victory in Spain’s capital and is still in third place. On Nadal, however, the German is still missing about 2,000 points.

As expected, Thiem has lost a place in the ranking despite another final in Madrid and is now eighth. Kevin Anderson passed Thiem with the first semi-final entry at a Masters of his career. Thanks to the 600 points in the Race to London the 24-year-old from Lower Austria jumped from eleventh to sixth place. The complete ranking of the men can be found here.

In the double race, two Austrians are now in the top 3 in 2018: Oliver Marach/Mate Pavic had to give up the lead by 235 points to Bob and Mike Bryan (USA), but Alexander Peya and his partner Nikola Mektic (CRO) have already moved up to third place. The duo won the Masters 1000 title in Madrid on Sunday.

Petra Kvitova made another leap forward in the women’s singles with her second consecutive tournament victory. The Czech improved by two places and is now in eighth place. Simona Halep continues to lead the women’s ranking ahead of Caroline Wozniacki and Garbine Muguruza.

Maria Sharapova made up twelve places and is currently in 40th place, finalist Kiki Bertens set a new career high with 15th place.

Julia Görges was able to pass Angelique Kerber again with two victories in Madrid and is thus Germany’s best-placed woman. Kerber, who was not at the start in Madrid, can already establish herself at the top again in Rome, this time Görges is suspending. The two are 185 points apart.
