John McEnroe has set milestones during his active career and is considered a living legend of tennis. Now the ex-number-one got an offer from US President Donald Trump: One million dollars for a match against one of the Williams sisters.
In June 2017, John McEnroe caused a sensation with a statement about Serena Williams. The ex-number-one of women’s tennis and 23-time Grand Slam winner would be in a maximum of 700th place in the men’s world rankings.
He himself, now 59 years old, could still be among the top 500 ladies. Not exactly charming what the American said back then.
Now Williams should get her revenge. US President Donald Trump wanted to create the framework for this by offering McEnroe a million dollars for a match against the 36-year-old or her sister Venus Williams.
McEnroe gratefully declined and explained the situation: “I commented on a game and suddenly received a message from Donald Trump”.
McEnroe left uncommented that this offer had fluttered in before or after Trump took office. The fact that McEnroe’s statements from 2017 are the basis of this offer leaves room for speculation.
However, McEnroe refused the cheque for one million US dollars. His reasoning is: “I was never the type who wanted to play a woman once.”
Many years ago there was a similar duel. The German ex-pro Carsten Braasch showed the two Williams sisters – at the very beginning of their career – the limits in 1998 and made the emerging stars look old.
