WTA: Angie Kerber storms into the quarter-finals of Rome

Former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel) has effortlessly reached the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Rome. The 30-year-old beat the Greek Maria Sakkari 6:1, 6:1 after only 56 minutes.

Kerber, in the $3.35 million sand court tournament number eleven on the seed list, has to deal with Elina Svitolina (No. 4) in the round of the last eight. After a false start, the Ukrainian won 0:6, 6:3, 6:2 against Daria Kasatkina (Russia).

Sakkari (22) surprisingly beat former number one Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) in the Italian capital on Wednesday, but had no chance against Kerber.

Simona Halep, the world’s number one, also benefited from the withdrawal of her opponent Madison Keys. In addition, French Open winner Elena Ostapenko won against Johanna Konta 2:6, 6:3, 6:4.
