WTA: Pregnant Sania Mirza: Long-term goal Olympic Games 2020

Double specialist Sania Mirza has been injured since October 2017 and is unlikely to make a comeback in the foreseeable future – for quite good reasons.

Problems with the patella tendon have put the Indian double ace out of action, and Sania Mirza now has even more time to recover. The former world number one in doubles is expecting her first child in October. Father is the Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

However, the 31-year-old is not thinking of ending her career. “Of course, my child is very important in my life. But after that, I want to go back. I would like to give this example, also for my child: that you don’t have to give up your dreams just because you are pregnant,” Mirza told the Indian news network IANS.

A nice goal: the next Olympic Games. “Olympia 2020 is still a long way off, but it seems feasible to me. Getting back to tennis will be my priority once the pregnancy is over,” Mirza even hopes for an earlier comeback.

In the course of her career Mirza won three Grand Slam titles in doubles (alongside Martina Hingis) and three in mixed (two with Mahesh Bhupathi, one with Bruno Soares). With Hingis she was undefeated for 41 matches at times.
