Dominic Thiem has reached the quarter-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Lyon. The first-placed Austrian defeated the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena effortlessly in two sets.
Under this motto Dominic Thiem went to Lyon for the first ATP World Tour 250 tournament. And as a prelude, this project was, not surprisingly, connected with a positive outcome for the Austrian: Thiem defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2 and 6-4 and is already in the quarter-finals.
The next opponent of the two-time semi-finalist of the French Open will again be a Spaniard: Guillermo Garcia Lopez, who also beat Frenchman Calvin Hemery on Tuesday.
Last year Dominic Thiem broke with the tradition of taking part in a tournament the week before Paris. The 24-year-old came to Roland Garros in 2015 and 2016 with his tournament victory in Nice. The licence from Nice has migrated to Lyon this year. Thiem had already expressed his willingness to play early on. Besides Austria’s number one, US aces John Isner and Jack Sock will be competing alongside others.
The first set against Carballes Baena only took just over half an hour, Thiem also started with a break in the second set. Now the 25-year-old man from Tenerife at least kept up better as a serve, followed until 4:5 in each case. After 70 minutes, however, the favourite scored his first match point, bringing home the never-endangered victory.
