WTA: Barthel first German in Nuremberg round of 16

Mona Barthel was the first German to reach the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg. The Neumünster won the Monday evening match between the former Fed Cup players and Carina Witthöft from Hamburg 7:5, 6:3, which was interrupted after the first set.

Barthel’s next opponent at the last test before the French Open in Paris on Sunday is Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands, who is seeded third.

Of the six German players in the main draw of the Nuremberg Insurance Cup, endowed with 250,000 euros, only Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) had the chance to enter the round of the top 16 on Tuesday afternoon, while the former top 10 player has to play Sorana Cirstea, Romania’s sixth-ranked player, in her opening match. The other three German participants around Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) had already failed in their first round matches at the beginning of the week.
