French Open: French Open qualification: Dennis Novak takes out number 1

Dennis Novak made it into the final qualifying round in Paris. On Wednesday afternoon he defeated the number one seeded Japanese Taro Daniel. Barbara Haas, on the other hand, has retired.

Novak won 4:6, 6:1, 6:0 after 1 hour and 39 minutes and is now playing against Czech Adam Pavlasek for a place in the main draw. It would be Novak’s first main field entry at the French Open – at this year’s Australian Open he had reached a Grand Slam main field for the first time. His opponent Daniel had caused a sensation in Indian Wells in March when he beat Novak Djokovic in three sets.

Barbara Haas, on the other hand, was eliminated. In qualifying round one she lost to Magdalena Frech from Poland 3:6, 6:7 (7).

In the evening Jürgen Melzer will play his second qualifying match against the Spaniard Carlos Taberner. Julia Grabher will meet Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands, who is seeded three, in qualifying round two on Thursday.

Sebastian Ofner was already eliminated in round one.
