Peter Gojowczyk has reached the final of the ATP tournament in Geneva. With a solid performance, the German beat Fabio Fognini in two sets.
Peter Gojowczyk’s last test at the tournament in Geneva was extremely positive. The German played his second ATP semi-final in 2018 and met the Italian Fabio Fognini.
Gojowczyk confirmed his good form right at the beginning of the game and chased his opponent back and forth in his first service game. Fognini had to go over Einstand several times before the emotive Italian took a 1-0 lead.
Both players served well and a balanced game developed. Gojowczyk took advantage of a small phase of weakness of his opponent at 3:3 and took the lead with a break and 4:3. But Fognini was unimpressed and grabbed the immediate re-break.
A further loss of the “Enfant terrible” brought “Gojo” the first set with 6:4.
After losing the set, Fognini lamented about his mistakes, his place and brought himself out of balance. The spectators saw four breaks in a row and finally a 2-1 lead for Gojowczyk.
Fognini was then treated on the left foot by the physiotherapist. The leading Dachauer did not let himself be disturbed by this, served strongly and surprised Fognini with occasional net attacks.
A visibly battered and annoyed Fognini poured out the game with increasing playing time and did not run balls into the half field again. “Gojo” served up the 6-4 and 6-4 win after 1:34 hours of play and will be in his second final in 2018 after the final at Delray Beach.
