French Open: First victory in Paris: Mischa Zverev defeats Florian Mayer

Mischa Zverev has won for the first time in his career a match in the main field of the French Open. The 30-year-old hardly gave Florian Mayer from Bayreuth a chance in the German 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) duel and followed his brother Alexander into the second round.

The second seeded favourite had already mastered his first round on Sunday.

Besides the two Zverevs (Hamburg) Jan-Lennard Struff (28) and Maximilian Marterer (22) also made it into the next round. While the Warsteiner Struff won 6:1, 6:3, 6:0 against the Russian Jewgeni Donskoi, Marterer (Nuremberg) defeated the American Ryan Harrison 6:1, 6:3, 7:5 shortly after.

Davis Cup player Struff hadn’t let himself be distracted by a rain interruption against Donskoi and won the match after only 1:20 hours. For Struff, who now meets Steve Johnson (USA), the victory was a successful birthday present for his mother Martina. After his debut success in Paris, Tortererer has to deal with Canada’s young star Denis Shapovalov (No. 24).

Mischa Zverev had played a match in Roland Garros’ main field for the first time ten years ago, the left-hander needed seven attempts for his first victory at the climax of the clay court season. Zverev will play either Feliciano Lopez (Spain/No. 28) or Sergej Stakhowsky (Ukraine) in round two. For Florian Mayer it was the last French Open, the 34-year-old finished his career at the end of the year.
