MLB: Yankees: Montgomery must undergo Tommy John Surgery

Jordan Montgomery will undergo Tommy John surgery and drop out for the rest of the season. This was announced by the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The operation to reconstruct his left elbow will be performed on Thursday. The left-hander had already been on the Disabled List since the beginning of May.

Montgomery had to cancel his last start against the Houston Astros on May 1 after just seven pitches. At that time there was talk of a strain of the flexor muscle in the elbow. In addition, a downtime of six to eight weeks was assumed.

This season Montgomery was probably the Yankees’ second-best starting pitcher behind Ace Luis Severino. He was 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA. Now the Lefty will not be able to pitch again until the end of 2019 at the earliest, and possibly not until the beginning of 2020.

This default makes it even more likely that the Yankees will still be active in the transfer market until the Non-Waiver Trade Deadline on July 31 to acquire at least one Starting Pitcher, as the rotation probably represents their biggest weakness.
