ATP: Will Roger Federer change his supplier?

The connection between Roger Federer and his long-time supplier Nike seemed to have been made for eternity. Now there is a change to the Japanese supplier Uniqlo.

Before Roger Federer’s comeback at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, rumours in the industry seem to have come true that the 20-time Grand Slam winner could switch to the Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo. As early as Saturday, corresponding news appeared in Italy.

However, during the French Open days in Paris, there were always discreet indications from the equipment industry that the 36-year-old could leave his long-standing partner Nike. Uniqlo had been a partner of Novak Djokovic in tennis, but the Serbian now plays in the dress of the traditional French brand Lacoste.

According to reports, Uniqlo’s ten-year deal with Federer is worth about $30 million a year. Nike, it was said from well-informed sources, had not been happy that Federer had taken longer breaks from competition. This would have resulted in limited marketing and sales opportunities. The contract with Nike is expected to expire at the beginning of March. However, Nike is said to have the right to license the well-known RF logo.

Federer’s spectacular change could also be interpreted as an indication that the Swiss is once again considering a start at the Olympic Games – the next venue in 2020 will be the Japanese capital Tokyo. Federer could then be the brand’s outstanding ambassador for Uniqlo – alongside Japan’s superstar Kei Nishikori.
