WTA: Lottner surprises in’s-Hertogenbosch, Barthel fails in Nottingham

Antonia Lottner managed a surprise at the WTA tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The 21-year-old from Düsseldorf, who qualified for the main draw, won her round of 16 against the second seeded Belgian Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-3.

Mona Barthel (Neumünster) in Nottingham, on the other hand, went out.

Lottner turned the match point after 1:48 hours. In the round of the last eight, the world number 148 has to deal with the unseeded Victoria Kuzmova from Slovakia. For the first time this year, German Fed Cup player Lottner has reached the quarter-finals.

Barthel failed in Nottingham due to last year’s winner Donna Vekic. The 27-year-old lost 5:7, 1:6 to the Croatian, who was seeded sixth in the quarter-finals after 77 minutes.

The world rankings-117th Barthel, the only German in preparation for the All England Championships in Wimbledon, defeated Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia in the round of 16.
