ATP: Kohlschreiber fails in the round of 16

Former title winner Philipp Kohlschreiber is the next German to retire from the grass court tournament in Halle/Westphalia. The man from Augsburg lost 6:4, 1:6, 2:6 against Matthew Ebden from Australia on Thursday, making Florian Mayer the last remaining German in the field at the Wimbledon dress rehearsal.

34 year old Mayer, who will end his career after the US Open, will play against 2005 finalist Andreas Seppi (Italy) in the afternoon for the quarter-finals. Of the eight German players who had started in Halle, only Kohlschreiber and Mayer had reached the round of 16. This is the worst balance since 2006.

After the end of the 2011 indoor winner in sixth place, only two seeded players are left in the tournament in the world number one Roger Federer (nine titles) from Switzerland and the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (No. 4). In Stuttgart, Kohlschreiber had already failed in the first round at the beginning of the grass court season due to Uzbek Denis Istomin.
