ATP: After last match in Halle: Mayer awarded for merits

After his last match at the ATP tournament in Halle, Florian Mayer has been awarded the “Excellence Award” of the event.

Tournament director Ralf Weber honoured the 34-year-old from Bayreuth for his great services to the turf competition in East Westphalia. “Florian inspired the audience again and again with his wit and creativity,” said Weber.

Mayer, who wants to end his career after the US Open, said after his 6-2, 6-4 round of 16 defeat to Italian Andreas Seppi: “The Gerry Weber Open is the best tennis tournament in Germany. Here I experienced my best moments as a professional.”

Mayer celebrated his greatest career success in Halle in 2016 when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final.
