Tatjana Maria plays at the WTA tournament in Mallorca for her first single title on the WTA tour. The German Fed Cup player defeated the young US player Sofia Kenin in three sets in the semi-finals.
German Fed Cup player Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) has entered a final on the WTA Tour for the first time in her career. The number 79 in the world ranking won her semi-final against qualifier Sofia Kenin from the USA 6:2, 2:6, 6:4 at the grass court tournament in Mallorca.
After a real break festival in the decisive round, Maria turned her first match point after 1:56 hours. In the final on Sunday, the 30-year-old will face either third seeded Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova or former US Open winner Samantha Stosur from Australia. Maria returns to the top 50 in the WTA ranking when she wins.
Maria had already eliminated Anett Kontaveit, number four on the seed list, in the first round of the $250,000 tournament. Further victories followed against her German rival Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) in the round of 16 and the Czech Lucie Safarova (No. 7) in the quarter-finals.
The former world number one Angelique Kerber (Kiel) had surprisingly failed in the first round on the Spanish holiday island. Antonia Lottner (Düsseldorf) retired in the round of 16.
