Wimbledon: Dennis Novak provides surprise in qualification

Dennis Novak has a surprise in store and is only one win away from his first entry into the main field of Wimbledon. Austria’s number four defeated Donald Young (USA), seeded in 21st place, 6-2 and 7-5 in the second qualifying round, after Gerald Melzer (No. 6) surprisingly failed 6-2, 4-6, 2-6 to Dominik Köpfer (Furtwangen). Barbara Haas also won.

The match of the World Rankings-172nd Novak had been moved from Court 9 to 15th place on Tuesday evening due to the advanced time. And the 24-year-old from Wiener Neustadt, who had been in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open 2018, quickly adapted to the new circumstances.

Novak used his first set point after 23 minutes against Young, who had already reached the eighth-finals twice (2011 and 2015) at the US Open. As a result, Novak never weakened and closed the sack with strong nerves.
