Matthias Bachinger, Yannick Maden and surprisingly also Dominik Köpfer have reached the last and third qualifying round at the grass court tournament in Wimbledon. Tobias Kamke and Mats Moraing were eliminated.
Dominik Köpfer caused the biggest surprise. The 24-year-old from Furtwangen, the world’s number 240, beat Austrian Gerald Melzer (No. 6) 2:6, 6:4, 6:2 and could reach the main field of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with another victory.
With an early break in the third set to 2-0 Köpfer set the course against the world rankings 106th Melzer for victory. Last March, the German reached his previous career high of 225th place. On Monday, he defeated Tatsuma Ito from Japan 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of qualifying.
Matthias Bachinger did not give himself any nudity in the 6:0, 6:3 against the British Daniel Evans. The man from Munich needed only 70 minutes for his progress. Yannick Maden from Stuttgart also made short work of his 6:1, 6:3 against Stefan Kozlov from the USA and took exactly one minute longer than his compatriot Bachinger.
Tobias Kamke (1:6, 5:7 against Thomas Fabbiano/Italy) and Mats Moraing (4:6, 4:6 against Stefano Travaglia/Italy) were eliminated.
