Wimbledon: Mona Barthel and Antonia Lottner reach final qualifying round

Mona Barthel and Antonia Lottner are only one win away from the jump into the main field of the Wimbledon tournament.

World Rankings-114th Barthel, eighth in qualifying at Roehampton, had to endure a nail-biting match before the 6-3, 1-6, 8-6 win over Oceane Dodin of France. The match lasted 2:20 hours.

Barthel (27) had always been in the main field at Wimbledon for the past seven years, but had never made it beyond the second round.

The 21-year-old Antonia Lottner, who last week in Mallorca as a qualifier had only failed in the round of 16 due to defending champion Anastasija Sevastova (Latvia), won in the second Wimbledon qualifying round against the American Irina Falconi (No. 24) 6:0, 1:6, 6:3.

“Toni” Lottner, number 128 in the current WTA ranking, failed last year in the final third qualifying round for the most important turf tournament in the world at the Slovenian Polona Hercog.

Matthias Bachinger (against Dennis Novak/Austria), Yannick Maden (against Jürgen Melzer/Austria) and Dominik Köpfer (against Norbert Gombos/Slovenia) will play their third round matches on Thursday.
