Wimbledon: Mona Barthel is in the main field – DTB quartet still in action

Mona Barthel clearly won her qualifying final in Roehampton on Thursday afternoon. The 27-year-old won 7-5, 6-1 against Jamie Loeb from the USA, putting her in the main draw at Wimbledon 2018, with four more Germans to play later.

Barthel took a quick 4-1 lead in the first set, but had to relinquish their serve twice afterwards, so Loeb fought back to 5-5. But with another break to 15 Barthel grabbed set one. In the second round, she didn’t give her opponent a chance, a good half an hour later she turned her second match point.

With her entry into the main draw, Barthel continues her Grand Slam series: she has not missed a major tournament since the Australian Open 2011. The best results in Wimbledon were three second rounds (2013, 2014, 2016).

Later in the afternoon, four other DTB professionals – Antonia Lottner, Dominik Köpfer, Yannick Maden and Matthias Bachinger – will be on duty.
