In a column, Nick Kyrgios has been unusually open about his feelings during his injury break over the past months. He writes about a renewed love for tennis and why the Davis Cup duel against Germany was the beginning of the misery.
A new man on his team helped Kyrgios make his comeback and make sure he enjoys being a professional, even the annoying gym sessions begin to please him.
Nick Kyrgios …
… about his injury break: “I missed tennis. In the past I never made a secret of sometimes not being able to stand this sport. I supported Alja (Tomljanovic, Kyrgios’ partner, Anm) at some tournaments, and that kindled the fire in me again. There will be frustrating times again, I’m sure I haven’t destroyed my last racket yet. But it feels like I’ve woken up now.”
… about the Davis Cup duel against Germany: “After my match against Jan-Lennard Struff, I woke up in the middle of the night and had stabbing pain in my elbow. I couldn’t hold him out anymore. When I warmed up for the match against Alexander Zverev, I felt the joint, but didn’t think about it, because the whole country focused on me. After a few serves, the pain went up to the neck area, so I knew that it would be a little more severe. Afterwards, I had to be very patient, not exactly one of my strengths.”
… about his trainer Ashcon Rezazadeh: “He was recommended to me by John Morris, my manager. I am always very careful when it comes to expanding my small team. My point is,’Things are going well the way they are.’ Ash taught me to enjoy the sessions in the gym. It’s a miracle, usually I’m cruel to look at – especially when I’m alone. “Today I pay more attention to my warm-up routines and go to the gym after matches.”
… about returning to Wimbledon: “This has always been a special tournament for me. I won the junior doubles twice, I will never forget my victory against Rafa Nadal in 2014. I am happy that we have booked our old accommodation from 2016 again. My whole team lives there, and my mother will cook for us. And my dad’s gonna come by, too, even though he doesn’t travel much. I love having him around.”
