Tatjana Maria also caused a sensation at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon about a week after her first title on the WTA Tour. The 30-year-old won 7:6 (3) against Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian fifth in the world rankings, 4:6, 6:1 on Monday evening. Julia Görges was successful against Monica Puig.
Maria had lost in round one at the Australian Open in Melbourne and the French Open in Paris. Next opponent for the world rankings-57th is now Kristina Mladenovic (France). In the week before last Maria had celebrated her first victory on the professional tour at the grass court event on Mallorca.
Earlier on Monday Petkovic had already reached the second round at the grass court highlight in London with a 6:4, 4:6, 6:2 against the Chinese Zhang Shuai (No. 31). Mona Barthel and Antonia Lottner were eliminated.
Görges overcame her first round trauma at the turf classic and won her first match in six years. In the sixth duel with Puig, Fed Cup player Görges won her second match. Next up will be Vera Lapko (Belarus) or Christina McHale (USA).
Görges had retired in London five times in a row in the first round since she set her best Grand Slam result at the high point of the grass court season with the third round entry in 2012.
