Wimbledon: First round K.O. for Mischa Zverev

Only four days after winning his first ATP title at the preparation tournament in Eastbourne, Mischa Zverev suffered a somewhat surprising first-round knockout in Wimbledon.

The older brother of Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev lost 4:6, 3:6, 4:6 to the Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a retro duel between two serve and volley specialists.

Thus, in the person of Alexander Zverev (Hamburg/No. 4), Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg/No. 25) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein), only three of a total of eight German men started the first round in the turf Mecca. Before Mischa Zverev, veteran Florian Mayer (Bayreuth), debutant Maximlian Marterer (Nuremberg) and Peter Gojowczyk (Munich) also failed at their opening hurdle on Tuesday.
