Julia Görges was the first German to reach the third round of the grass court tournament in Wimbledon. The 29-year-old defeated Belarussian Wera Lapko 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 and won two matches in London for the first time since 2012. Tatjana Maria lost 2:6, 2:6 against Kristina Mladenovic from France and missed a third round duel with Serena Williams (USA).
Gorges next opponents are now Barbora Strycova (Czech Republic/No. 26) or Lesia Zurenko (Ukraine). The two were unable to play their part on Wednesday due to an interruption in the rain and falling darkness.
Lapko had clearly dominated the world rankings 13th Görges at the beginning and also profited from seven double mistakes of her opponent in the first set alone. In the second set the Fed Cup player made a bit too many mistakes, but in the end she proved to be strong as a nerve.
Maria had not found her way to her game against Mladenovic from the beginning. After only 65 minutes, the 30-year-old, who celebrated her first victory on the WTA Tour at the grass court tournament in Mallorca, then had to admit defeat.
After her surprising opening win over the Ukrainian world number five Yelena Switolina, Maria missed her chance to enter the third Grand Slam tournament for the second time after 2015.
In the morning Andrea Petkovic had already retired against Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium. The 30-year-old had apparently been affected by health problems. Angelique Kerber (No. 11) will not play her second round game until Thursday, all other German women had already failed in round one.
