Wimbledon: Great! Julia Görges in quarter-finals for the first time

Julia Görges is among the last eight in Wimbledon for the first time: The German number two defeated Donna Vekic in two sets and now meets Kiki Bertens.

The great opportunity seized: Julia Görges achieved a premiere with an excellent performance on “Manic Monday” in Wimbledon: For the first time in their career, Görges reached the quarter-finals after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Donna Vekic.

The former double partner of the German number two, Karolina Pliskova, is not waiting there, but Kiki Bertens. The Dutch player, just like Görges, not an established friend of grass court tennis, bid farewell to Pliskova, the last remaining top ten player in the tableau.

In contrast to Vekic: The Croatian always blossoms in early summer, and in round one the reigning US Open winner Sloane Stephens bid farewell unadorned. Görges, on the other hand, recovered well after her marathon victory against Barbora Strycova, played concentrated and aggressive in the right moments.

Navh won the first set, Görges also took a quick 3-0 lead in round two, but had to fight for more than ten minutes in the fifth game to confirm the break once more.

The 5:2 was not much easier, Görges secured the seventh game with a sensational forehand ball along the line. After that Vekic scored only one point, after 76 minutes it was clear that the woman from Regensburg would reach the quarter-finals.

Julia Görges has not yet written to her next opponent: The two previous duels with Kiki Bertens went to the Dutch rider, most recently smoothly in Charleston – but there on ashes.
