Jan-Lennard Struff is the last remaining German-speaking player in the double tableau. With partner Ben McLachlan, a solvable task awaits on Tuesday.
That a German player would make it to the quarter-finals of the doubles competition in Wimbledon was already clear before Manic Monday: Finally Jan-Lennard Struff competed alongside Ben McLachlan against Tim Pütz and Philipp Petzschner. The latter the winners of Stuttgart. The former was the semi-finalists of Melbourne.
Struff and McLachlan won the game 6:3, 6:4 and 7:6 (3). This is important in that their chances of taking part in the ATP final in London have increased again. The fact that Struff was also convincing in the singles with two comeback victories gives the pair further impetus.
The task in the round of the last eight does not seem impossible at first glance: Frederik Nielsen and Joe Salisbury are waiting. However, the Dane and his British partner have already thrown two seeded pairings out of the tableau: Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin and Cabal/Farah.
From an Austrian point of view, however, the third Grand Slam tournament in 2018 is already over: Alexander Peya and Nikola Mektic fought Robin Haase and Robert Lindstedt for 3:24 hours, caught up 2-0 and finally lost 6:8 in the fifth set.
Last year’s finalists, Mate Pavic and Oliver Marach, were already eliminated in round one. Marach/Pavic can nevertheless plan with London, but the prospects for Mektic/Peya are also good.
