It is so common for professional rackets to be wrapped in plastic for better protection. Wimbledon semi-finalist Kevin Anderson is now declaring war on this enormous consumption of plastic and wants to improve the world.
True to the motto: “I only have to save the world for a short time,” Kevin Anderson has dedicated himself to a special task.
The South African wants to reduce plastic consumption on and off the tennis court. This would mean that Roger Federer and Co.’s newly-covered clubs could no longer be packed in a plastic bag.
“I’ve seen a documentary on Netflix about plastic waste in the oceans. It’s a big problem and it opened my eyes,” Anderson told the Guardian. That is why Federer conqueror Anderson does not want to wrap his clubs in plastic as usual, but does not want to waste them unnecessarily.
It is common practice for professionals to put their clubs in a plastic case after stringing to protect the equipment and the strings. However, this seems to be more of a habit than essential, as at least one representative of a clothing company in Wimbledon sees it: “The cover is only an aesthetic thing. Players can also put a little publicity on it.”
With his action against plastic waste Anderson has received encouragement from some professionals. “I have received many emails from players in Wimbledon. Tennis is a global sport and connects many people. It’s a very important issue and one where we can make a big difference,” the serve giant continued.
As Vice President of the ATP Players’ Council, Anderson has the necessary reach to push his project forward. His stated goal: to ban plastic packaging from ATP tournaments!
