WTA: Kerber wants to choose tournaments more consciously and hopes for hype

After her triumph in the turf Mecca of Wimbledon, tennis star Angelique Kerber wants to make more conscious decisions about possible tournament participations in the future and focus on the big events.

“To be in a final against the best players in the world on the big stage are moments to stand up and train for,” said the 30-year-old on Tuesday on her return to Germany in Stuttgart.

The three-time Grand Slam winner also accepts not to return to the top of the world rankings. “I don’t think about that so much. I’ve experienced this wonderful feeling before and won’t need it again tomorrow or the day after,” said Kerber, who wants to pick up the bat again at the tournament in Cincinnati on August 6.

Until then she wants to enjoy the time – on Tuesday with a barbecue evening with her grandparents and afterwards with an extensive vacation, whose place, however, has not yet been determined. “I consciously want to take a few days off and soak up the moments as best I can. Who knows if they will come again,” said Kerber.

The success in the Wimbledon final about Serena Williams, through which Kerber “had fulfilled her great dream” and “can now say that my career is complete”, should also inspire other people, according to the Kieler. “I hope that the title will cause a hype in Germany. Tennis grew up with Steffi (Graf, d. Red) and Boris (Becker, d. Red), but unfortunately fell into a small hole afterwards”, Kerber said: “I hope that tennis is now back in focus a bit more”.
