Hamburg outsider Tamara Korpatsch is the only German to reach the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland.
The 23-year-old celebrated a 6-2, 6-0 first-round win over local hero Stefanie Vögele, who was seeded seventh, at the site of her tour debut two years ago, which was not only surprising in terms of clarity; this was the third time this season that the former top 20 player Mona Barthel (Neumünster) reached the round of the top 16 in a WTA tournament, but not beyond the round of the last 16.
Korpatsch, who is still mainly playing in Challenger tournaments, repeated her entry to the last 16 from the tournaments in Lugano and Prague as number 158 of the world ranking through the coup over her 82 places higher led opponent Vögele. Her next opponent is Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain.
Barthel had already missed the chance to reach the quarter-finals before Korpatsch’s success. In the round of the best 16 players, the 28-year-old lost 4:6, 6:2, 5:7 against Evgeniya Rodina from Russia, who had already kicked out Carina Witthöft from Hamburg in the first round. Like Witthöft, Antonia Lottner from Düsseldorf had already failed in the first round.
