In an open letter on his personal homepage Novak Djokovic gave insights into the emotional world during his injury break. The Serb admitted that during his physical difficulties he also struggled with mental challenges and explained how he fought his way out of his motivational hole.
“In the 2017 season, an injury to my right elbow put me out of action for six months,” Djokovic wrote. “The injury was a problem, but another big one was my lack of motivation. I had no problems training and enjoying my time on the court, but I felt mental hurdles when I had to compete with others”.
The 31-year-old won his 13th Grand Slam title last Sunday by beating Kevin Anderson. On his way there, however, he was always doubtful whether he would ever return to his old performance level.
“In the past two years I have simply not been patient enough with my expectations,” Djokovic said. “My strategy wasn’t the smartest, and I certainly haven’t listened enough to my body. I tried to find solutions everywhere, although the real problem was in my body.”
After many changes in the coaching team, in his training methods, but also in his bat, Djokovic did not know whether he would find his desired level again. “Part of me always believes in my possibilities, but there have been many dubious moments.”
Djokovic, who was down in five sets in the semi-final of Wimbledon Rafael Nadal, also paid tribute to his wife, Jelena, and his children.
“The most wonderful sensation I have ever experienced in my career was seeing my wife with our son in her arms at the award ceremony,” wrote Djokovic. “Ever since I became a father, I wanted my children on the court with me. It’s magical. When I thought this moment just couldn’t get any better, he yelled, “Daddy, Daddy! At that point, I melted away completely. I am so happy to have experienced this moment.”
