Dominic Thiem, together with Jürgen Melzer, just missed an opening victory in the double competition of the ATP tournament in Hamburg. Against the German Jan-Lennard Struff and the Japanese Ben McLachlan, they lost 6:7(5), 6:7(4).
It was the second time that Thiem had competed with Melzer in doubles. In autumn 2016 they got a wildcard in Metz, where they also lost in the first round.
Thiem will not play his first-round singles match against Corentin Moutet (France) on Tuesday before 5.30 pm. Melzer missed the main draw with a close defeat in three sets against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the qualifying final.
For the newly crowned Wimbledon winner in mixed doubles Alexander Peya and his regular partner Nikola Mektic (Croatia) there was nothing to win against the Spanish-Pakistan pairing David Marrero/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi. The third seeded Peya/Mektic, who already won the titles in Marrakech and Madrid this year, lost 4:6, 5:7.
Top seeded Australian Open winners Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic will enter the tournament on Tuesday against Argentinians Leonardo Mayer/Diego Schwartzman. Philipp Oswald will play his first round match against Marcus Daniell (Australia)/Wesley Koolhof (Netherlands) together with his Belarusian partner Max Mirnyi.
