Dominic Thiem is in the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Hamburg: The first-placed Austrian defeated the young Frenchman Corentin Moutet in two sets.
A solid start for the number one of the German Open 2018: Dominic Thiem defeated Corentin Moutet from France 6:4 and 6:2 in the last match on the Center Court at Rothenbaum Hamburg on Tuesday and thus entered the second round. There the Lower Austrian will meet John Millman from Australia.
After an initial touch, Thiem picked up the pace in the seventh game, took the break for 4-3 and served after 46 minutes to win the first set, at the end with a simple smash that Moutet could only look back on without a chance.
In the second act, the 19-year-old Frenchman presented with the first break, Thiem immediately beat back. The left-hander, who ranks 119th in the ATP world ranking, tried to employ Thiem with high balls on the backhand during this phase – in vain. For the favourite, however, this was more of a chance to find his rhythm. Thiem, in any case, went from 0:2 to 5:2 and served after 82 minutes to 15.
Thiem and Moutet will meet again next week – at least face to face. Then they will compete at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, under similar auspices: Thiem will start again as number one in the traditional tournament in the Alpine Town, Moutet was awarded a wildcard.
Dominic Thiem will face John Millman in round two on Thursday. The 24-year-old from Lichtenwörth only played against the Australian on Sunday in the German Bundesliga – and just won the match tiebreak.
