Angelique Kerber plays a dream season. The new Wimbledon winner, who is currently on a well-deserved short holiday, has set new personal records in statistics over the past seven months. Julia Görges’ strong year so far can also be seen from the figures.
In some key statistics, Angelique Kerber is even better after more than half of the season than two years ago. In 2016 she reached the Australian Open, the US Open, the final of Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The 30-year-old not only has the most match victories (39) on her account at the moment, she also sets standards in terms of return and serve strength. At the 6:3, 6:3 triumph in the Wimbledon final she took Serena Williams (USA) four times off the service.
While Kerber only managed to win 31.8 percent of their return games in their disappointing past season, the figure for 2018 is 46 percent so far. This is also a personal best value for the world number four, which started in January as number 21.
The same applies to 66.1 percent points earned after the first service charge and 59.8 percent of points gained after their own service. Or also the values of the gained return points (48.5 percent) and the won service games (71.5 percent). This was the result of an evaluation by the software company SAP, which was analyzed by the WTA.
For the first time in her career, Angie, who reached at least the quarter-finals in ten of her twelve tournaments in 2018, winning two events (Sydney and Wimbledon), used over half of her break chances (50.8 percent).
And one statistic is particularly significant: Kerber already has twelve victories over top 20 colleagues on her account – in 2017 she was only able to record a single victory over an opponent from this region. Their coach Wim Fissette, whom the Kiel coach signed in November 2017 after separating from her long-term coach Torben Beltz, also played a part. The Belgian worked with Kerber on her serve, changing her foot position, among other things.
The strong season of Julia Görges, who reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in Wimbledon, can also be seen in the SAP evaluation. The number ten in the WTA ranking leads this statistic with 304 aces and is one of the best players in the circuit. In the entire Wimbledon tournament, the 29-year-old only managed one Ace less than superstar Serena Williams (48).
