ATP: Nikoloz Basilashvili dethrones Leonardo Mayer in Hamburg

Nikoloz Basilashvili celebrated the greatest success of his career at Rothenbaum in Hamburg: The Georgian won the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in the final against defending champion Leonardo Mayer.

In the end, it was Leonardo Mayer’s curtain ball that didn’t make it to the finals of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Hamburg. But Nikoloz Basilashvili had the greatest success of his career at the last edition of the German Open, which was held under the aegis of tournament director Michael Stich.

6:4, 0:6 and 7:5 were the results for the 26-year-old from Tbilisi, who, in addition to the 500 points for the ATP world ranking list, was also allowed to take home prize money of 349,200 euros from Hamburg. Mayer had defeated his namesake Florian in the final last year, this time the break to 5:6 in the deciding set was decisive.

This success of Basilashvili, who is looked after by German coach Jan de Witt, is all the more remarkable because the Georgian played his way into the main field after qualifying. And almost stumbled upon the Austrian veteran Jürgen Melzer. In 2017, Mayer even managed to win the traditional event at Rothenbaum in Hamburg as Lucky Loser.

With this victory Basilashvili will improve to position 35 in the ATP world ranking. And actually has no time to celebrate his triumph: after all, the Hamburg champion named Djere for the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, where he will meet Laslo Djere from Serbia in the first round.
